Why side returns punch above their size
You may only gain a few square metres, but the kitchen becomes wide enough for proper units, a dining table or an island. Light improves if you add a glazed roof or high-level windows carefully detailed against the neighbour.
It is not always cheap per square metre — foundations, steels and roofing still apply — but the lifestyle gain on a tight Gillingham or Chatham terrace is huge.
Structure and the neighbour
You are usually building close to or on the boundary. Party wall, drainage and how rainwater leaves the new roof need sorting before diggers arrive.
Steels often open the old side wall so the new floor flows into the existing kitchen. That opening is where engineer calcs and building control focus.

When to combine with a rear push-out
If you still feel short of depth, a wraparound (side plus rear) may be the better long-term move. We help you weigh cost against how much garden you can spare.
